Let’s face it, who wants a modern, fuel injected engine with a notchy old four-speed behind it? Especially when you can run a stronger manual or automatic transmission in the tunnel to support your increased power level and still make it look old school cool with a period retrofit shifter of some sort. The typical 5- or 6- speed manual or automatic transmission found in the same donor car as your engine swap fodder is usually the best place to start for adding a modern transmission behind your swap engine. The Allison 1000 electronically controlled automatic transmission, found behind GM’s Duramax diesel engine in the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups from 2001-2019, has become one of these popular modern transmissions to swap. Part of it is the torque capacity, at well over 600 lb-ft of torque capability, and the other reason is the standard GM V8 bellhousing pattern it uses makes mounting it to a GM V8 a bolt on affair. Even the torque converter bolt pattern makes life easy, as the Allison uses the 4L80-E six bolt pattern. Of course, there are several available to fit the Allison 1000 transmission to other engines as well, with the Cummins to Allison conversion being one of the more popular options. The 5-speed Allison transmission was used in 2001-2005 models and featured five forward gears (5th as an overdrive). The 6-speed Allison transmission was used in the 2006 and up Silverado/Sierra and was upgraded to six forward gears with double overdrive. 2010 saw a change to the output shaft, so most swap enthusiasts utilize the 2001-2009 versions, of which use identical transmission cases. Being electronically controlled, you will have to use an Allison 1000 standalone controller to handle shifting, just like any modern electronic automatic you may use in your project. Traditionally, building something with a transmission that was never meant to be installed in it would require the actual transmission, a floor jack or transmission jack, and a spotter or two keeping things in check while measurements were taken, parts tack welded, and so forth. It’s not an easy or quick process, and it can be dangerous with a 300-plus pound Allison 1000 transmission being carefully balanced on a floor jack. Most enthusiasts are using a good used Allison 1000 transmission from a Duramax powered Silverado for their project and the last thing anyone wants to do is crack it open and mess with the “magic” inside. Using a replica transmission to mock up your transmission swap for your project is much safer and your back will thank you for your efforts. Past mock up options included a plastic transmission or foam transmission, which, while being light and easy to maneuver, these plastic transmissions often did not hold up well to repeated usage or did not allow physical attachment of a transmission mounted shifter or the driveshaft yoke for measurement of a custom driveshaft. They’re also not the best option when localized welding and grinding is happening to fab transmission mounts/brackets either. Plastic blocks can easily be damaged from grinding or welding sparks, and frankly there weren’t even any Allison 1000 mock up transmissions on the market!
