Old, 1950’s American Impressionist coastal landscape by listed artist Hubert Rose depicting waves crashing on the rock jetty and light tower. Signed and dated lower left “Hubert Rose” and the date is either ’50 or ’56. Painting in good, untouched, uncleaned original condition. I didn’t want to take it apart, but I can tell it’s on canvas with no stretchers and there’s cardboard to be seen verso. It must be on some sort of canvas board. The painting itself measures approx. 14 x 13 3/4 inches. Overall with the frame, it measures approx. 19 5/8 x 19 3/8 inches. The 1950’s wormy chestnut frame, alone, is a very desirable thing. Per the chestnut blight, this type of frame isn’t made anymore because the trees were wiped out long ago. I’m pretty sure that Hubert Rose used this wormy chestnut frame thinking that it has a rustic / driftwood kind of feel that pairs nicely with his coastal scene here. But, dealers today prize these frames to use on Modernist, Mid-century Modern, and Abstract Expressionist paintings. If recycling this one, it could be cut down to a standard size 10 x 14″ (opening) or what have you. The Hubert Rose painting could always be reframed in something else. Just a thought for anyone thinking of ‘two for one’ possibilities. Hubert Rose was a prominent New Jersey Shore artist. I posted some photos I found on the net, documenting some of his bio. Those are just screen shots. I have no hard copies of the screen shots to mail anyone. I’m sure anyone can do a better job than me in ‘internet searching’ these things. Back in the 1960’s and 1970’s, Hubert Rose owned and operated his studio / gallery in Bay Head, NJ, called the Anchor and Palette Gallery on 45 Mount Street. Apparently, prior to that, he’d served as a Navy commander. Like most landscape / seascape artists, he’d travel and paint (supposedly to Cape Cod, etc.) but I think he was mostly a Jersey Shore artist working around Point Pleasant, Barnegat Bay, Bay Head, Belmar and that area. I’d say he was primarily an Ocean County, NJ artist. Even though the structure on the rock jetty, maybe at Manasquan (?), seems to be a light tower, it lends an ‘industrial’ feel to the scene. It’s man against nature, I’d say. It has a nice ‘night scene’ mood to it that I really like. I know it might benefit from cleaning, because it is dirty, but I enjoy it the way it is. This painting has a great texture per the impasto (raised paint areas). It’s somewhat forward leaning in technique since Rose applied the paint mostly with a palette knife. Another American Impressionist who did knife paintings was Ernest Lawson. This is a rare ‘estate fresh condition’ painting that no dealer has gotten to yet. If you like the Jersey Shore artists and you’re drawn to this oil by Hubert Rose as much as I am, this will be a very nice choice to add to the collection. ~Chris Smith in NJ
