NO RESERVE. 1/1250 WWII German Emden, Light Cruiser, Reichsmarine – then Kreigsmarine, 1925-1945, the first large warship built for the German navy since the end of World War I – as it appeared in its early years. Emden was laid down by the Reichsmarine on December 8, 1921, launched on January 6, 1925, and commissioned on October 15, 1925. Her design was based on blueprints for the second SMS Karlsrunhe of WWI commissioned in November 1916, named to commemorated the first cruiser SMS Karlsrunhe which was sunk by an accidental explosion in November 1914. The long construction period was a result of the political instability and financial weakness of Germany in the early 1920s caused by its defeat in the war. When commissioned, Emden had “banded” funnels with curved funnel caps. However, pictures of the ship from as early as 1931 show her two funnels as “clean-sided” and lacking caps, with the forward funnel larger than the after one. This is what led us to indicate above that the model represents the ship in its early years. Emden spent most of her career as a training ship – embarking on 9 major world cruises from 1926 through 1939 that took her into all of the world’s oceans, with ports of call in dozens of countries. At some time in the early 1930s she became a unit of the Kriegsmarine after Hitler and the Nazis controlled government replaced the Weimar Republic’s Reichmarine with this newly-formed naval branch of the Wehrmacht. Emden’s commanding officer for the fifth long-range cruise and the first one undertaken as a unit of the Kriegsmarine was Fregattenkapitan (“FK” or “Frigate Captain”) Karl Donitz, who had assumed command on September 29, 1934 upon the ship’s return to service following an extensive overhaul. This cruise lasted from November 10, 1934 through June 12, 1935 and included more than a dozen port visits. Sailing down the West Coast of Africa to venture into the Indian Ocean as far as Ceylon (today’s Sri Lanka), she entered the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal to return to the Atlantic for the final leg of the journey back to Germany. On September 3, 1939 following the start of World War II Emden participated in laying a defensive minefield off Germany’s North Sea on September 3, 1939. After placing her first supply of mines, she returned to Wilhelmshaven to restock. On September 4, while she was moored in the harbor, a force of ten British Blemheim bombers attacked the port. German anti-aircraft guns downed four of the aircraft, one of which crash inadvertently into Emden. Nine of her men were killing and another 20 wounded, becoming the German fleet’s first casualties of the war. After Operation Weserubung, Germany’s invasion of Denmark and Norway in which she was one of the ships that captured the Norwegian capital Olso, Emden found her time at sea split between combat operations such as minelaying orperations and escorting convoys in the Baltic and her basis role as a training ship. Returning to Keil for repairs on February 6, 1945, she was seriously damaged on April 13 by an Allied bombing raid and the next morning she was towed some 10 kilometers to a position offshore of the seaside resort of Heikendorfer Bucht. She had taken on a list of 15 degrees to port from water entering her damaged hull but her crew managed to stop the flooding. To prevent her from sinking, she was run aground in shallow water and finally decommissioned on April 26. To prevent her capture by the advancing Allies, she was blown up with explosives on May 3, just days before Germany’s surrender on May 7. The wreck was broken up for scrap in situ over the following five years. This group of models are full-hull pieces with the complete underwater portion, including screws and rudders. Very nicely detailed with well-defined mask lines between the different colors of paint used to add to their authenticity. The model comes mounted on a black resin base and is packed between two matching formed clear plastic “supporting” pieces which are carried inside a formed flexible outer plastic point-of-sale display case mounted on a cardboard backing card. It is recommended that the model be kept upright when the packaging is opened so that it doesn’t lean over and bend or break off a fragile part like a mast. Once unpacked, the ship’s masts, yards and radars might require slight ‘tweeking’ to properly straighten or align them. Metal and plastic model. DeAgostini #DAKS35. MIB. These conditions are generally only noticeable at close inspection and often can be carefully ‘tweeked’ into proper alignment.
