Condition as seen. Interesting Manuscript. Grand Gymnastic Exhibition at Strouts Barn Brothers William E. Stepherson and Frank B. Strout having finished a course of lessons on gymnastics by Prof. Sargeant of this city are now prepared to give a grand exhibition of some of the most difficult and daring feats of the art. Stepherson’s favorable performance is climbing a rope which he has been seen to do to the height of 6 feet, without losing his hold; while Strout has actually been seen to turn a summersault three times in succession and then come on his feet. This exhibition is to take place next Tuesday morning at four o’clock and as it is their first public performance, the admission is gratis. Mel Gilmore Advertising Agents Sketches of Army Life No. 1By a Returning SoldierWe are aware that our subject is one that has been talked, read and written about the last four years, more than any other that we could mention, and undoubtedly it will be talked about and written upon for many years to come, and the half will not have been told that has been sadly experienced by the boys in blue during the four years of blood and carnage that we have passed through. It is our present purpose to give the reader a few facts in our own experience as they occurred during the years of ’62, ‘63 and ‘64. Our lamented Lincoln had made several calls for volunteers, which had been promptly responded to, and every day brought new proof that the four with which we were contending or resolved and fearfully and Earnest. Several young men from my own neighborhood, my friends and associates were among the first to respond to their countries call and it’s our danger in peril. They had fallen, battling no and bravely in adjust and holy course. Still lingered, unwillingly to separate myself from the many pleasant associations that surrounded my childhood home; but when in July ’62 the call came for 300,000 men, I readily saw that many would be obliged to go from my own town to whom it would be no less sacrifice than to myself; therefore I resolve to suffer self condemnation no longer, but do my duty as one who was ready to sacrifice home, comfort, and leave, dear friends, to endure the hardships, privations and dangers of the tented field. I did not even heed that clause in mosaic law, which reads, “when a man has taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business, but he shall be free at Home one year and cheer up his wife which he has taken.“ on the way to join our regiment we had an opportunity to visit for the first time the capital of our own state and through the politeness of a friend to enjoy a stroll through the state house and the adjacent grounds where the 16th Maine Infantry Vols. was then stationed in camp, the site of which gave us a birds eye view of a soldiers life in his own state. But the time allotted to us for Pleasant sightseeing here having expired. We find ourselves comfortably seated on a velvet cushion seat and rapidly world away to a new field of observation and action. It being a late dinner hour when we reached our destination about the first we then observed, were several large kettles filled with bean soup, and our first action was to devour about a pint of the same, with one or two crackers; and we recollected of observing at that time that they were very appropriately named, for rest assuredly they would crack one’s jaw if they undertook to masticate one without the eight of the hammer. This was our first soldier dinner, and although there were many times during our sojourn in Dixie that we should’ve been happy to have partaken of one as good yet at that time, we thought it somewhat rather hard, most especially the bread. But our first night in camp brought a realization of what we had sacrificed and what the future had in store for us to our minds with a greater force even in the first dinner. Soldiers having arrived much faster than the tents, six or seven men were signed to each which gave each man 1 foot of space with the, soft side of a board upon which to lie. Three in a bed, and that composed of a little straw and two sheets would be perfectly splendid (as the ladies) compared with our conveniences on that occasion as I got that night, I hope never too endure the second time, for I found myself in the morning more like a board on edge then like a human being. However, we survived the pressure and was able to stand our detail for guard duty, a vocation for which our knowledge was about as limited as in any other pertaining to soldering. It was my fortune to have a post where there was no one allowed to pass, therefore I received my orders accordingly but finding it rather tiresome to walk and carry my piece for two hours in the hot sun, my comrade on the next post and myself thrust the bayonets of our muskets into the ground, thinking that a better use than to be pointed at the breast of some fellow soldier who might have the natural desire of all mankind to go where it was not his privilege but we soon learned that it was not military to leave the musket to standard alone for as we were congratulating ourselves upon the ease and comfort of our situation compared with being at home paying, the agitate was riding by and quickly noticing the manner in which we were doing our duty, he brought us to a sense of military law by commanding in a loud voice, “take those muskets and walk your beats” and further adding that if he ever caught us doing guard duty in that manner again, we should be severely punished. To Be Continued Lodge opened in due form by W.C.T. Sketches of Army Life No. 2By a returned Soldier The time was drawing near that we were to leave our native and lovely state for one may desolate by the ravages of two large contending armies. We were to separate ourselves from temperate, moral and religious influences to be subjects to the many temptations incident to army life. Our friends, the ladies, ever watchful for moral excellence, proposed a temperance meeting on the field last Sabbath afternoon before our departure for Washington, and we are happy to say that they came in goodly numbers, bringing baskets filled with choice, eatables, which, together with their presence, we believe did very much to cheer and encourage those who were about to leave all that was near and dear, to suffer, privations and hardships, for the good of those at home as well as themselves.Remarks were made by several soldiers and citizens upon the subjects of temperance or more, especially showing up in the best possible danger, unless ever on our guard of being stricken by worse foe than southern rebels, occurs whiskey dealt out by army sutlers. Our Col was enthusiastic in his remarks, and I remember of feeling that we were extremely fortunate and having such a man to lead us into battle, but how weak is human nature, and how liable are colonels, even, to fall victims to that damming vice, in temperance, as we shall show in some of our forthcoming sketches. The day previous to our leave was one of general excitement and confusion in camp. It was payday, and each Private soldier had received his $85 to dispose of as he thought best. Peddlers were numerous using their best endeavors to get the greatest amount of money for the smallest equivalent. Many paid from $12-$20 for revolvers which only increased their burden for a few months and was then thrown away, pronounced only a nuisance and a curse by almost every private soldier but for once in our life, we boast of sense enough not to be “bamboozled“ by those professional villains. Toward evening, we drew our arms and equipments together with three days rations, which was new evidence to substantiate a fact of which we had already heard this that we should be required to serve in the capacity of pack mules in addition to our other duties. The morning of our departure dawned upon as happy set of men apparently as ever shouldered arms very few realized what war was in a still smaller number expected that uncle Sam would need their services more than one year and many were hopeful of being at home in five or six months. Was the hero of the day and nearly everyone believed that he would lead our armies onto victory and soon restore, peace, and tranquility happiness but bitter disappointment was in store for us. The scene of our departure for Washington that August morning was only one of 300 that was witnessed in the Lyle states during that and the succeeding month. Who can imagine the amount of anguish endured by the gentler sex at partying with husbands, fathers, brothers, and lovers. Our journey which would otherwise have been ____ tiresome was made very pleasant by the interest manifested by all classes and most, especially the ladies and showing their appreciation of our patriotism. The men and boys cheered and ___ their hats from field and workshop and fair hands immeasurable greeted us by the waving of handkerchief with the glorious stars and strikes from Palace and cottage. While at several stations, we met with the more substantial welcome by those of both sexes who had anticipated are coming by preparing baskets, full of cake and pie for the soldiers. But if we had been lionized before no comparison with our reception at Philadelphia, for we were an excellent supper prepared by the generous and patriotic people of that city, and as we marched from the ferry to the depot, a distance of more than a mile both sides of the streets were densely crowded, and had a stranger been a looker on who had never seen a regiment of soldiers there before he would have thought that everyone in the regiment had met sweetheart beside all the friends and relatives he had on earth. Until now we had rode in first class cars, but here we were obliged to exchange them for cattle cars, which caused much dissatisfaction and the use of no small amount of profanity. The great mini soldiers and putting on their uniform, throw away their manhood, and this was probably the reason of our having to put up with such accommodations. The regiments that proceeded us had conducted so badly that the owners of the road were justified. We reached Baltimore in the morning, having made our journey from Philadelphia all in the night. This is the first of the war, many radical friends of succession, but in 62 many having enlisted in the rebel army and union being predominant warned the rebels to keep a civil tongue. We were well received in on our own part felt very grateful for the breakfast which awaited our coming prepared to the expense of the city. From Baltimore to Washington, we enjoyed our ride, although our accommodations were better, but it being in the daytime, we climbed upon the top of the box which we improved the opportunity for sightseeing and as we near the great national rendezvous for federal soldiers and most active place of preparation for cruel and destruction are interest rapidly increased. Long trains of army wagons or ambulances numerous batteries of flying artillery or parade or drill, regiments of infantry and cavalry, bayonets and saber flashing in the sunlight. Forts and earth with their frowning, looking down upon us all brought to a realization of the magnitude of the struggle in which we were to be participants. The national capital and other public buildings of Washington were objects of special interest to me as I suppose they were to the most of the soldiers. The fair that we got at the “soldiers retreat” was not that anyone would be liable to suffer greatly from an overloaded stomach and contrasted very much that we had got Philadelphia. About 9 o’clock the next morning after our arrival we received marching orders, but without having the least idea of our destination and we afterward concluded that no one knew where we should pitch tents that night. We had already made up our minds that our colonel was somewhat proud of his regimen and became more fully convinced that such was the fact when he had marched us 2 miles or more for no other purpose then to exhibit us to the loft about the streets of Washington. If good looks only were requisite to make good soldiers then no doubt he was justly proud for we very often heard it remarked “fine looking men“. However, we had not come so far from home holy to see and be seen.“file right” came the order at the head of the columns and soon we were on bridge crossing the Potomac River, which at this place is more than a mile wide and we stood on Virginia soil. Soil that had already drank the life blood of mini union soldier. Who can that? He felt no thrill of apprehended fear as he stood for the first time, dressed in the attire of a union defender on soil, so rent and torn bolts of war. But we had a reason for being thrilled for as we left the bridge and took the road leading up the river. We plainly heard heavy and increase can and then the news come that our army had met the rebels for the second time on Bull run. We had expected fighting, but so soon was not anticipated by many I think however we felt then in there as though we were fairly in for it and determined to do our duty bravely and manfully. after marching a mile more or less up the river, the order came to halt and we did for almost 2 hours during which time our officers went on, but for what purpose we never knew. When they had been absent or more suddenly cry alarm and looking up the ascent in our front, 100 rides are more be held the cloud of dust rapidly approaching. Rebel cavalry was now the cry taken up and repeated by almost every man. In a moment, every soldier had slung his cartridge box and grasp his musket thinking that the very moment to test his courage had come, but we had to take further action. We discovered that rebel cavalry coming down on us at such a rate was no more or less than a drove a four or 500 mules which had broken loose from their enclosure and was being followed by 20 or 30 Negroes on horseback with the intent of recapturing a big score, but nobody killed.
