Updated October 2024 This method of application of oxalic acid dehydrate is now federally allowed by the EPA for one’s own use, but may be restricted by your State, so check first with your State pesticide regulator. **This product cannot ship to Alaska, California or Hawaii** Each package contains 12 extended release strips this is enough for 4-10 or 8 frame deep hives for 60 days. Can be used with honey supers on. Can be added at any temperature and at time of the day or night. Can be added no matter the time of year. Mites are not resistant to oxalic acid dehydrate. These Varroa Mite Extended Release Maintenance Strips (VMERMS) are a must-have for any beekeeper looking to keep their hives healthy and vigorous. Formulated specifically for use with honey bees, these strips are a reliable and effective way to control varroa mites and prevent them from destroying your apiary. Made from high-quality materials and ingredients, these strips are easy to use and can be added to your beehive without disrupting the bees or the queen. Whether you're a seasoned beekeeper or just starting out, these Varroa Mite Extended Release Maintenance Strips (VMERMS ) are an essential tool for keeping your hives healthy and productive. With years of extensive testing we know this is the cheapest and most effective type of mite maintenance for our hives. Application: Remove all strips from the packaging and use scissors to remove the rubber bands. These strips are preformed to be easily placed on top of your frames. We highly suggest only using what you will need and place the remaining in a zip lock bag. You’ll need to use the remaining strips within 2 months and you’ll notice that the strips will change color to a white dry substance which is the acid coming in contact with the air. Maintenance: Use 3 strips per deep on frames #3-5 and 7 and for a nuc use only 1 on the middle frame with brood on it. For double deeps put 2 strips in the top deep. Two mediums equals one deep. We suggest that you do your mite count first and if you have more than 3 mites per 300 bees in your alcohol wash then you’ll need to do several OA vaporized treatments or whatever you’re using to knock those mites down. Remember these strips are for maintaining the hive after your treatments. They are not for knocking down an infestation of mites. These extended release strips will last about 65 days and will need to be discarded in your trash or compost pile and be immediately replaced with new strips. You’ll notice after several weeks your bees will begin to chew on the strips which is normal since they are made of cardboard. Below is a video on the importance of mite management in honey bees. It is currently the only EPA-recognized oxalic acid product for in-hive use and the only way a beekeeper can apply oxalic acid to their colony for varroa mite control. Using gloved hands or tongs, apply 3 strips between the brood chambers, placed so as to be within the cluster (avoid placing under a top feeder where syrup may spill, or directly against pollen substitute). Placement of the strips must allow for movement of the bees over both surfaces. The extended release strips can be hung over the top bars, inserting them spread between the two brood frames. The strips must be placed within the brood chamber. If placed where bees don’t walk over them, no distribution of acid occurs thus defeating its purpose of controlling mites. Important Notice: We suggest before inserting the strips you should first locate your queen and either remove her in a queen clip or place her as to not roll her as you insert the strips between the frames. Storage: The strips can be stored in a labeled sealed container or ziplock bag for up to 2 months, by which time the cellulose will slowly start to degrade. If exposed to high humidity, the strips will absorb moisture and be much messier to apply. Once inserted within the cluster, they quickly absorb moisture and “wet up.” Warning: This product is caustic and can cause burns to the skin and eyes. A solution of 1 part boric acid to 4 parts water will neutralize oxalic acid dehydrate.
