Received these 27″ x 1 1/4″ wheels on a vintage bike (not a Paramount), and was informed they were originally on a 1973 Schwinn Paramount. If you are a vintage Campagnolo geek, you will know that the year of manufacture of Campagnolo hubs was stamped on the insides of the axle locknuts. I checked this – See pics for front and rear outer locknuts with “CAMP / 73” stamped on them. The hubs are factory-drilled and are I believe a bit rare. They look unique, but still scream Campagnolo. There is a quick-release safety warning sticker on the front hub which I decided to leave alone. The bearings felt a tiny bit “scratchy” but not hideous when turning the axle by hand. So I opened up the hubs to find a “nearly dry” grease situation. I do not believe the cups, cones, or bearings have any damage. I added some Park green tube grease and reassembled, everything finger-tight. I did NOT do an actual bearing repack job – just added some grease. I recommend taking the time to do a real repack job. There are no skewers. Originals, if you can find some, would be the straight type as the cycling authorities required the curved-in type sometime later in the ’70s. The rims are in what I would call “very good” condition. As far as finish, I am confident they could polish up well. The side faces of the rims show wear from dark-colored (black) brake pads, and each wheel has a tiny “hop” spot (dent) almost too subtle to mention, but hey – full disclosure folks. Unless you’re trying to build a concourse level, or a next-level NOS fantasy showroom-original restoration, these are without a doubt rideable – I speak from many miles of cycling on many bikes / rims. These are just fine, but I cannot state that they are “perfect” – they are quite true, left-to-right, however. The rims are original Weinmanns, made in Belgium. They have the “cupped” inner surface profile (or technically, “section view”) for the ’73 Paramount. All the spokes look great, no buzzers or replacement mismatch spokes. You will notice the Suntour Freewheel. What a groos affront to the integrity of the all-original theme. Pretty sure a 5-cog Regina Oro would have been original. May be hard to find and/or expensive when you do. I do not own the correct 4-prong Suntour freewheel tool, but I just ordered one so I can get rid of that freewheel that just doesn’t belong. If these sell before the tool gets here, I’ll have to just wish you luck. Otherwise I’ll get that thing off the hub before I ship.
