This incredibly scarce book contains two important texts in Ancient Greek. They are bound as one in beautiful blind tooled decorative roll binding with original pig skin over beveled wooden boards with working clasps. Our first title is by Hermogenes of Tarsus printed by Parisian bookseller Chretien Wechel who was active between 1522 and 1554 and was originally from Germany. This was printed between 1530-1538 with his printer’s devices. Contains: 1) Rhetorica Absolutissimum (1538) .. rules of speaking 2) De Inventione in Four Books (1530).. how to compose an oration 3) De Fromis in Two Books (1531).. on oratorical style 4) De Methodo Grovitatis (1531) Hermogenes of Tarsus was a Greek Rhetorician, surnamed The Polisher. He flourished in the reign of Marcus Aurelius. His works are considered monumental having inspired William Shakespeare during the Renaissance. Hugh Blair also mentioned Hermogenes in his worn on Rhetoric. His works on rhetorical treatises became popular textbooks that have still survived until today. The printer Chretien Wechel specialized in Greek, Hebrew and humanist impressions. He was close to the idea of Martin Luther and the French evangelicals. He had two main printer brands, each of which had several variations. There first represent a tree with two robins and the motto “Unum arbustum non alit duos erinthacos” the second shows a Pegasus above a caduceus surrounded by horns of plenty. Our second title is Aristotle’s Organon printed by Johannes Bebel in Basil, 1536 with printer’s devices which features a palm tree, with a large stone in its crown, against a Renaissance shield; the design has been attributed to Hans Holbein, the Younger. The introduction was prepared by Simon Grynaeus. Grynaeus travelled to England in 1531 (with Bebel) and was assisted by Thomas More to find manuscripts of Greek texts. Bebel decided, however, to name Erasmus on the title-page of Grynaeus’ editions of Aristotle, rather than the actual editor. Organon is the standard collection of Aristotle’s six works on logic. The name Organon was given by Aristotle’s followers, the Peripatetics. 1) The Categories… introduces Aristotle’s 10-fold classification of that which exists: substance, quality, quantity, relation, place, time, situation, condition, action, and passion. 2) On Interpretation… introduces Aristotle’s conception of proposition and judgement, and the various relations between affirmative, negative, universal and particular propositions. Aristotle discusses the square of opposition or square of Apuleius. 3) The Prior Analytics… introduces his syllogistic method, argues for its correctness, and discusses inductive inference. 4) The Posterior Analytics… deals with demonstration, definition and scientific knowledge. 5) The Topics… treats issues in constructing valid arguments, and interference that is probable, rather than certain. It is in this treatise that Aristotle mentions the Predicables, later discussed by Porphyry and the scholastic logicians. 6) The Sophistical Refutations gives a treatment of logical fallacies, and provides a key link to Aristotle’s work on rhetoric. Our condition report for this book is good. Binding is fragile, but intact. We hesitate to open it completely. Boards show little wear other than typical surface dirt. Clasps are in good, working order. Text blocks are in beautiful condition with sporadic, perhaps Renaissance era, marginalia. Occasionally there are light stains that do not inhibit readability. Overall, the book is in beautiful condition for the age and importance of the works inside. Please do not hesitate to ask us for additional photos.
